Driving in Saudi Arabia is enjoyable thanks to modern roads, but knowing the local rules keeps your trip safe and helps you avoid fines.
Speed and Saher cameras
- The limit on many highways is 120 km/h, rising to 140 km/h on some roads where signs show it.
- Saher cameras are common in cities and on highways, and fines are recorded automatically.
- Always follow the limit shown on the signs.
Basic rules
- Seat belts are required for the driver and passengers.
- Using a phone while driving is not allowed.
- Child seats are important for young children's safety.
- Traffic drives on the right.
Desert and mountain roads
- Avoid driving at night outside cities because of camels on the road.
- Keep water with you and fill up before long distances.
- On mountain roads such as Al-Hada and Asir, use a low gear downhill.
After an accident
- Stop in a safe place and switch on the hazard lights.
- Call 911 or 999 if needed; minor accidents are reported through Najm.
- In serious accidents, do not move the car before you are told to, and take photos.
- Contact the Sajil branch or customer service to let them know.
Before you drive off in a rental car
- Check the car with the branch staff and record any note.
- Find out which fuel the car needs.
- Save the branch phone number in your phone.
